The best thing about church (besides God)

The best thing about church (besides God)

Take Heart Shop

A couple of days ago, on our way home from Youth Group, my son asked me:

"Mom, besides God, what is the best thing about church?"

Without thinking much, I said, “the people, for sure.”

He agreed, then added, “especially the people who serve in the church. They could be doing anything else on this Tuesday night, but they’re here, serving.”

I loved that he could see this at a young age. That simple conversation stayed with me, and today, I’d like to invite you to reflect on this:

1) When people serve, they become living examples of Jesus, who said He came “not to be served, but to serve” (Mark 10:45). That’s what transforms a gathering into a family. That’s what makes the church the most beautiful place to belong. 🩷

2) When we serve, we find our place in the body of Christ. God designed the Church like a living body, each part unique, each part needed. Serving isn’t just “helping out", it’s stepping into the role God prepared for you, using your unique gifts to strengthen the whole body. When you serve, you discover where you fit and how your contribution matters.

"Now you are the body of Christ, and each one of you is a part of it." (1 Corinthians 12:27)

3) We deny ourselves to bless others. Serving shifts our focus from us to them. Suddenly, our own problems feel smaller because we’re caught up in something bigger, God’s Kingdom. We stop asking, “What do I need?” and start asking, “Who can I serve?”

4) Take time to appreciate those who serve. From caring for kids in the nursery to greeting people at the door to cleaning bathrooms, every act of service matters. A simple “thank you” can encourage someone to keep going.

5) Volunteer to serve in your church. Don’t be surprised if the one who ends up most blessed… is you. Serving has a way of refreshing your spirit, igniting your faith, and drawing you closer to Jesus.

Let’s be people who not only see the value of service but live it out... joyfully, faithfully, and for God’s glory. I pray that the Lord help us to see the needs around us and to step into the place He has prepared for us in the body of Christ.

“Lord, thank You for the gift of Your Church and for every person who serves faithfully, often unseen. Teach me to serve with joy, knowing that in serving others I am serving You. May everything I do point back to Your glory. In Jesus’ name, Amen."
