Putting First things First

I once heard this phrase:
"One of the greatest purposes of social media will be to prove on the Last Day that the lack of intimacy with the Lord was not due to a lack of time."
And I was like... wow!
I personally work with social media, and I also believe this platform can be used to spread and glorify the Name of Jesus. But let's be honest... how many times have we found ourselves grabbing our phones for absolutely no reason, just to avoid boredom?
The world offers endless distractions, but nothing compares to the true peace and wisdom found in the Word of God. May His Word always be our first stop before anything else.
Time with the Lord should always come first. As Matthew 6:33 reminds us: “Seek the Kingdom of God above all else and live righteously, and He will give you everything you need.”
In the book "Liturgy of the Ordinary: Sacred Practices in Everyday Life", Tish Harrison Warren suggests some challenges for the readers:
- Try to observe this week how you resist tranquility and boredom. Make room for a few minutes of daily silence and invite God into that moment.
- Notice small moments of calm in your day: waiting at a traffic light or for your coffee to brew. Embrace these moments by keeping them empty and quiet (resisting the urge to distract yourself with your phone)
Finally, I would like to share a beautiful Brazilian song about this theme (free translation):
Be my universe
I don’t want to give You just a little of my time
I don’t want to give You only one day of my week
Be my universe
I don’t want my words to come as drops so small
I want them to pour like a flood of blessings from my soul
Be my universe
Be all I feel and think, my everything
May You be my first thought as each morning begins
The light that shines through my window
Be my universe
Fill every part of my thoughts and my days
May Your presence and Your power be my strength and stay
Jesus, this is my desire
(PG - Brazilian singer)
Dear Father, help me to prioritize time with You. May You be my first thought when I wake up. Help me to be intentional with every task and faithful with the time You’ve blessed me with. Lord, restore the moments I’ve lost, bring back the great and joyful experiences that have been forgotten or overlooked, and fill my days with Your peace and purpose.
In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
